Deyou Sex

in: Girl Gone Gaming

Having recently celebrated my birthday, I’ve found myself reflecting with fondness upon some of the quintessential firsts in my life. The awkward tenderness of my first kiss; the anxious thrill of my first solo spin as a freshly licensed driver. But soft! What light through yonder memory breaks as shiny and brightly as the first time I fell in love … With a video game.

What? You were expecting ruminations over my first time with the humpity-bumpity? Interesting enough, that eager young lad was also the one who first introduced me to the joys of PC games … And let’s just say that the latter was much more satisfying. =)

Now if you’ve been betwixt and between my ramblings here, you may remember that my first true foray into gaming was with my beloved Oregon Trail, followed several years later by the NES – a console burned so fondly into my heart that I happily refer to myself as a Nintend’ho. But I can’t say that I truly fell in love with gaming until I got my first PC and began a torrid affair with an intriguing gentleman named Gabriel Knight.

Oh, that Gabriel! He was so mysterious and clever, voiced to utter perfection by the infallibly swoon-worthy Tim Curry. I was transfixed by Sins of the Father, and later transformed – into a lifetime PC gaming enthusiast, thanks to the sequel, The Beast Within. But while the first two Gabriel Knight titles will always rank high on my “favorite games of all time” list, my affection for adventure games was fleeting. There are a few other wonderful adventures still fondly remembered – The Longest Journey, Syberia – but it wasn’t long before I craved something with a little more interaction. I’d heard about role-playing games, but had assumed that they might lack the intrigue and spice that a solid adventure game inspired. But much like that first tumble in the bed sheets, all it took was a little trial and error, a little patience and practice, and before long, I’d found my sweet spot.

Lost in my heady romances with RPGs (and the occasional real-time strategy), I became a woman obsessed. Arx Fatalis! Morrowind! Oblivion! Scores more than I can no longer recall, all blurred together in a delirium of bludgeoned beasts and honorable quests. And yet, there was still something missing. I watched friends playing first-person shooters with a mixture of awe and disdain. I was impressed by their lightning-quick reflexes and intuition, but the lack of storytelling left me cold. The perfect game, in my eyes, had goals far beyond your number of kill-shots. It had adventure and open-ended possibilities and made endless combat look lazy in comparison.

And it also had melee weapons, dammit! Like a crotchety old woman stationed in her ubiquitous front porch rocking chair, I ranted over guns like they were some kind of new-fangled technology. “When I was your age, we killed things with broadswords and claymores! We used bows and arrows, not those blasted sniper rifles. We swung clubs (or old bones, when times were tough) and we were fighting like men!

In truth, I was secretly inflamed by my lack of superior reflexes and that nagging sense of vertigo that crept up anytime I attempted a fast-paced shooter. Had The Guild existed in the early 2000′s, I’d have aspired to be Riley, the “stupid tall hot girl” who excelled at Halo and could match the boys skill for skill.

But then, I found it … A game with the perfect blend of action and RPG elements; an intriguing storyline that perfectly melded mystery and conspiracy; a game that taught me to embrace gunpower (and the shooter within) as I fought the good fight in a seedy, dysotopian world. Enter, Deus Ex.

If you haven’t played this amazing game, you are dead to me. … Okay, not really. But I’d be willing to take you over my knee and learn you some lessons, because missing out on Deus Ex is a crime that’s certainly worthy of a punishment! And if you don’t believe me, the respected publication PC Gamer Magazine has declared Deus Ex to be “the best PC game of all time”. As in, ever! And while I do take a slight bit of umbrage with this sentiment, having declared a Mass Effect 2 as my personal all-time favorite, that distinction was won by the most narrow of margins – and was a recent victory at that. Deus Ex, after all, debuted 10 years ago and is still a classic with a luster that has not been dulled by time or dated graphics. Ahhh, but there is one notable blip in its history of awesomeness, and unfortunately it’s a glaring one: the all-around disappointing sequel, Deus Ex: Invisible War.

But 7 years after Invisible War tainted the Deus Ex legacy, and long after I’d stopped hoping for another go-around with JC Denton, I learned of Deus Ex: Human Revolution, set to debut sometime in early 2011. Ohhh, if you could have witnessed the fan-girl squee! I’m cautiously optimistic that Human Revolution will find a way to reinvigorate the franchise, especially since it’s being billed as a prequel to the first game. And now that Spoony has secured entrance to the iconic Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), along with his brilliant and talented TGWTG comrades, AngryJoe and JewWario, I’ve tasked him with a quest line of my own. He is to bring me any and all juicy bits of news that he can summon with regards to Human Revolution … And I’ve also made him promise that if there’s a Thane cosplayer at the Bioware booth, he must be rubbed up against in my honor. Association by osmosis! (Or something.) But c’mon, who wouldn’t want to hob-knob with Mass Effect 2′s drell assassin, that most lethal Lothario of lust-worthiness …

Hey, don’t judge! We all have our vices, and I can’t help it if I find certain video games to be alluring, intriguing, and downright Deu-Sexy. ;-)

My first steps into gaming came at a young age, and if only I had become as talented and skilled at pleasuring the opposite sex as I eventually would be at stomping goombas and saving kingdoms than perhaps I would still have a girlfriend.
I was never much of a PC gamer in my early days but eventually learned the error of my ways and came back around to enjoy titles such as Dues Ex, even in time to the Gabriel Knight titles and many more.
As always a wonderful read Scarlett, thank you :)

Oh, now I get the title! Clever pun!

I still consider the relatively calm, mysterious 'Riven' to be one of the greatest games ever made, but I too enjoy challenging shooters with intriguing plots. To be honest, I'm now regretting the fact that I didn't include 'Deus Ex' in my Top 5 list on YouTube.
I purchased 'Deus Ex: Invisible War' from Gametraders in mid-last year, but haven't been able to play it on my ancient PC. It's not a case of slow processors or inadequate RAM, but rather the wrong BRAND of video card. That really ticked me off, as I've been looking forward to playing 'Invisible War' ever since I got hooked on the original.
I found an old adventure game at a yard sale a couple of years ago, and wondered if you've heard of it. It's called 'Darkseed II'. This series was a collaboration between Cyberdreams and the macabre painter H. R. Giger, and draws upon Giger's unnerving biomechanical artwork to create two clashing worlds for the player. The presentation is dated, but the graphics look quite detailed for a 2D adventure game, and it has absorbing atmosphere and an appealing retro feel that reminded me of 'The Dig' (another all-time favorite).

By the way, I finally got 'Bioshock' to work on my iMac! WOOT!

Anyway, this was another amusing, engaging article, providing an entertaining insight into your passion for games and the evolution of these genres. Great work!

I'm more of a Liara person… But Thanes voice should narrate movies together with Stephen Fry.

Deus Ex. The one game of the last ten years that I actually played more than ten times, maybe more than twenty, not counting unfinished playthroughs. Tough legacy, following up on this game.
I really, really wish for DX3 (Why 3 if Invisible War never had a 2 in its name, I do not know.) to be good. From the last previews it sounds better than IW, they substitute more skill-based shooting with direct controls and damage according to skill, and sneaking takes place in third person. But at the same time they put the importance of Augmentations above everything else.
Plus, the graphics really rock. Cyber-Renaissance style is sooo grand.

On topic of Gabriel… The Beast Within was released at the time when I started trying to get fluent in German again since my parents were both offered well-paying jobs over here. GK2 was surprisingly able in conveying German bureaucracy, though that did not really make up for the downright hilarious dialogues of American actors trying to play German people without any obvious knowledge of the language. I fondly remember the “Ick sprecke keen English” part as the one where I nearly suffocated on a piece of apple I was chewing on.
(And you get two big points plus on my like list for mentioning Morrowind and Arx so close to each other. ^^)

And I suppose the fact that that Gabriel Knight image looks like Mr. Conan O'Brien has nothing to do with all this.

Nintendo was my first console too. Great games for that one, Mario, Zelda, Baseball one, and the one which is basically Civilization but with castles and stuff.

I can't wait for the new Deus Ex. I loved the first one, and liked the second one, but the second one was annoying after a while. Still, high hopes for this one.

Beauty. Just threw down my third or fourth play-through since DX's launch a few months back and still loving it. If anyone is still looking for more DXiness (and who isn't) check out the total conversion project “The Nameless Mod” (http://thenamelessmod.com/) cooked up by a gang of rabid forumite fanboys a while back.

New weapons, music, improved graphics and a surprisingly involving plot despite the outright bizzare premise – It's quite good if given the chance.

  • Brainiac

Considering your first love Gabriel Knight, you might want to send Spoony over to either the dtp or Wizarbox booth as they'll be showing Gray Matter, the new game by Jane Jensen, the creator of Gabriel Knight. Despite Angry Joe's booth listing, the game is no longer affiliated with Anaconda (and I'm sure that saddens you). In any case, think of this title as the BioShock to Gabe's System Shock. The official site is http://www.graymatter-game.com if you want to know more.

  • Trip

I love the Gabriel Knight series, it's always cool to see someone else who remembers it (which doesn't happen often, unfortunately). Brainiac is right, you should definitely check out Gray Matter.

  • silverboot

Ah, those heady days for the western RPG, when depth of story and mechanic were paramount. I recently played a bit of Arx Fatalis, and it blew my mind that you actually cooked things. I just don't see that in a game that often. By the way, in case you would be interested, there is a website called Good Old Games.com that sells about half the games you mentioned in this article as online downloads, guaranteed to work on modern OS, for dirt cheap. As someone with (it seems) a heavy level of nostalgia for PC games of yore, you should really check it out.

Thanks for another terrific read, Scarlett! :)
With the aid of my tech-savvy dad, I was raised on Humongous Entertainment games, and my first grown-up adventure experience (at age 11) was also made by Sierra. Oh, King's Quest VI, your wonderful voice acting, fun puzzles and groan-worthy death messages will not be forgotten.

Wish me luck on my first foray into action RPG – Mass Effect arrived today! :D (Admittedly, I only got it because I want to import my character(s) when I get Mass Effect 2 at some point, but I feel no shame for that. XD) 8-)

“What? You were expecting ruminations over my first time with the humpity-bumpity?”

    Quoted for hilarity.

I wouldn't worry about being judged; I suspect all girl-gamers (nay, all gamers, let's not segregate here) have been there at some point. For me it was Solid Snake in the first Metal Gear Solid, although maybe that was driven by his name, I don't know…

“if only I had become as talented and skilled at pleasuring the opposite sex as I eventually would be at stomping goombas and saving kingdoms than perhaps I would still have a girlfriend.”

    That was pure WIN! =)

  • http://scarlettopia.com Scarlett

Hmmm, “Darkseed II” sounds familiar, but I can’t say I remember playing it. Sadly most of my Adventure Game experiences have faded into memory’s oblivion, and at one point I got the idea to sell off most of my old titles on Amazon, so I can’t even remember what they were anymore. I retailed the Gabriel Knight series (of course!) and Longest Journey, but I doubt I’ll go back and play them again. Once you get that delicious blood-thirst that comes with action RPGs, it’s so hard to go back!

  • http://scarlettopia.com Scarlett

Morrowind & Arx are SO good! Love, love, love.

If you're in the mood to play Deus Ex again (and who wouldn't be?) there's a site I found years ago where a fella gives detailed accounts of “alternate playthroughs” that can really fuck with the game in a most cheeky and hilarious manner. You might want to check it out – I remember it being a lot of fun! http://www.it-he.org/

  • http://scarlettopia.com Scarlett

WIN! I didn't even notice that … Now that just makes me lust over him even more. =)

  • http://scarlettopia.com Scarlett

If Spoony's tales from E3 are on point, Deus Ex 3 should be AMAZING. And really, there's no reason why it shouldn't be – it's been what, 7 years since the last game? Plenty of time to make a kick-ass prequel. Can't wait!

  • http://scarlettopia.com Scarlett

Sweet, Martin – thanks for that link! I didn't know that homebrew mods existed for DX. Will definitely check it out, as I plan on playing it again within the next month or two.

  • http://scarlettopia.com Scarlett

I was curious about what Ms. Jensen had been up to lately. Spoony didn't mention a game called Gray Matter, but I'll ask him about it. Sounds intriguing!

  • http://scarlettopia.com Scarlett

Srsly, it's rare for someone under 25 to remember the GK series, which is a shame – and even then, it never seemed to gain the popularity it was due. We need a reboot, NAO!

  • http://scarlettopia.com Scarlett

I remember seeing GOG before – can't say that there's much I'd want to play (now that I'm hooked on the modern stylings of Mass Effect 2 and the like) but I love that a site like that exists. And good call on Arx – I forgot about the cooking. That bit was awesome!

  • http://scarlettopia.com Scarlett

Yay, Sierra! I didn't get into the Kings Quest games until they were a little passe (didn't have a computer to play on until 1999) but I remember finding them once while I was canvassing an Abandonware site. Oh, the good times I had downloading all those “oldie but goodie” games!

Have fun with Mass Effect!! I can't wait to hear how much you looooooooove it. =)

  • http://scarlettopia.com Scarlett

Haha! Thank you most kindly, Miss Michelle! =)

  • http://scarlettopia.com Scarlett

Hah, “Solid Snake” … That's a smexy name if I've ever heard one! ^_^

  • Lang

Great article! You made me try Gabriel Knight and as far as adventure games go it was pretty good.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Peter-Davidson/1226257656 Peter Davidson

Oh hell yeah, Deus Ex is by far the most epic of epics I have ever played. No joke, the whole myth about the “its so awesome that when its mentioned someone reinstalls it” I reinstalled it! Its that awesome. Shame about the sequel though… I was really disappointed :(
    Go JC!!!

  • CjRayn

Respect, girl. Respect. Deus Ex is my favorite game of all time, and I get so tired of having to explain to people what it was. “The game on playstation?” No…not really.

I remember a friend getting a copy of it free when he bought a video card, and we were both like, “What's this? Doo Sex. What a crazy name. Oh, we'll get to it after we finish playing Thief.” Heh. We found out.

  • TheTrueAnonymousOne

Scarlet, just letting you know that if you decide to go on and try Deus Ex: Invisible War and are expecting a game that’s just as good or superior to Deus Ex, prepare to be sorely disappointed…
